Adelaide Anne Procter

Adelaide Anne Procter was an English poet and hymn writer whose devotional texts became widely used in nineteenth century Christian worship. Born in London, she was the daughter of poet Bryan Waller Procter and grew up in a literary and intellectual environment. Procter became associated with charitable work and was active in causes related to social reform and the support of women. She later joined the Roman Catholic Church and wrote poetry reflecting themes of faith, sacrifice, and spiritual perseverance. Several of her poems were later adapted into hymn texts for church use. Among the most widely known is the hymn My God I Thank Thee Who Hast Made the Earth which celebrates the blessings of daily life and God providence. Procter work combined poetic sensitivity with deep spiritual reflection.
