Biography

Alfred V. Fedak (born 1953) is an American organist and composer known especially for church music and original hymn tunes. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he graduated from Hope College in 1975 with degrees in organ performance and music history and later earned a master’s degree in organ performance from Montclair State University. His further study has included church music, harpsichord, and music history in the United States and Europe. He is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists and has held national responsibilities in the Guild’s professional-certification work.

Fedak has published hundreds of choral and organ works and more than a hundred hymn tunes. His hymn collections include The Alfred V. Fedak Hymnary, Sing to the Lord No Threadbare Song, God of the Future, and Stones Unthrown. He served for many years as Minister of Music and Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany, New York, while also working in other musical and educational settings. His 1998 tune HANDS OF JESUS was specifically written for Michael Perry’s “Heal Me, Hands of Jesus” and later became the subject of an organ prelude by Carson P. Cooman.
