Traditional English Melody (AMERICA)

AMERICA, also called NATIONAL ANTHEM and associated in Britain with God Save the King, is an eighteenth-century melody of uncertain authorship. Hymnary traces the tune through Harmonia Anglicana around 1742 and Thesaurus Musicus in 1744. It became publicly prominent in Britain during the 1740s, but no single composer can be identified with confidence. Older hymnals sometimes credit Henry Carey, while modern scholarship and many current hymnals treat the melody as anonymous or of uncertain origin.

The tune’s influence extends far beyond one hymn. In the United States it became especially familiar through Samuel Francis Smith’s My Country, ’Tis of Thee and was also paired with God Bless Our Native Land. Elsewhere the melody has served royal, national, and patriotic texts in several countries. Its meter is 6.6.4.6.6.6.4.

The melody was already the model for Mahlmann’s German Gott segne Sachsenland before Brooks and Dwight created the American English hymn. Thus the English text did not merely acquire a convenient tune afterward: the German source itself had been fashioned for this musical form. The historic melody is public domain, though later harmonizations and arrangements may carry separate rights.
