Angelus Silesius

Angelus Silesius was a German mystic, physician, poet, and hymn writer whose devotional poetry influenced Christian hymnody. Born Johannes Scheffler in Silesia, he studied medicine and philosophy before experiencing a deep spiritual transformation that led him to join the Roman Catholic Church. He later became a priest and devoted himself to writing religious poetry reflecting mystical spirituality and devotion to Christ. Several of his poetic texts were later adapted into hymns used in Christian worship. One of the most widely known hymns associated with his work is O Sacred Head Now Wounded which reflects on the suffering of Christ during the Passion. His writings emphasized humility, love for Christ, and the believer union with God. Angelus Silesius contributions helped shape the mystical and devotional dimensions of Christian hymnody.
