Anne Steele

Anne Steele was an English Baptist hymn writer whose devotional poetry became widely used in eighteenth century Protestant worship. Born in Hampshire England, she was the daughter of a Baptist minister and grew up in a deeply religious environment. Steele faced significant personal hardship including chronic illness, yet she devoted herself to writing devotional poetry and hymns. Publishing under the pen name Theodosia, she produced several collections that were widely read among Baptists and other evangelical Christians. Her hymns often reflected themes of trust in God, spiritual struggle, and the hope of divine comfort. Steele is generally regarded as one of the most important female hymn writers of the eighteenth century. Her texts were included in many early Baptist hymnals and remained popular for generations.
