Anonymous Dutch author

The original Dutch text is usually identified as anonymous. It first appeared in Adrianus Valerius's Nederlandtsch Gedenckclanck, published in Haarlem in 1626. Hymnological sources connect the text with the Dutch struggle for freedom from Spanish rule, while noting that its exact author and date of composition are uncertain.
