Biography

Arthur Cleveland Coxe was an American Episcopal bishop, poet, and hymn writer who contributed significantly to nineteenth century Anglican hymnody in the United States. Born in New Jersey, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later entered the ministry of the Episcopal Church. Coxe served as Bishop of Western New York and was active in theological writing and church leadership. He also wrote hymns and translated ancient Christian texts. His most widely known hymn is O Where Are Kings and Empires Now, a reflection on the enduring nature of the church throughout history. Coxe writings illustrate the interest of nineteenth century Anglican leaders in connecting historic Christian tradition with modern worship.
