Arthur Sullivan

Arthur Sullivan was an English composer and church musician whose hymn tunes became widely used in Christian worship. Born in London, he studied music at the Royal Academy of Music and later in Leipzig where he developed strong skills as a composer. Though widely known for his operettas written in collaboration with librettist William Gilbert, Sullivan also made important contributions to sacred music. He composed several hymn tunes that were included in influential Victorian hymnals. Among his most famous church compositions is the tune St Gertrude which is commonly paired with the hymn Onward Christian Soldiers. Sullivan work helped bring musical richness and accessibility to congregational singing in the late nineteenth century. His compositions remain part of the heritage of Anglican church music and continue to be sung in many churches today.
