Biography

Arthur Tozer Russell was an English Anglican clergyman and hymn translator whose work helped introduce German hymnody to English congregations. Born in London, he studied at Cambridge and later served as a parish priest. Russell developed a strong interest in the rich hymn tradition of German Lutheranism and translated several hymns into English. His translations often attempted to preserve the theological depth and poetic character of the original texts. Although he did not translate as extensively as Catherine Winkworth, his work contributed to the growing appreciation of continental hymn traditions within Victorian Anglican worship. Russell contributions illustrate the important role of translators in expanding the international exchange of Christian hymn texts.
