August Ludvig Storm

August Ludvig Storm was a Swedish Salvation Army officer, preacher, administrator, and hymn writer. Born in Motala, Sweden, on October 23, 1862, he attended trade and agricultural schools before entering Salvation Army service. Hymnary’s biographical record notes that he became finance secretary at Salvation Army headquarters in 1892 and that his poetry regularly appeared in the Swedish edition of The War Cry, Strids-Ropet.

Storm wrote the Swedish text “Tack, o Gud, för vad du varit” when he was twenty-nine. It appeared in Strids-Ropet in December 1891 and originally consisted of four stanzas built as an extended litany of thanksgiving. The text is striking because gratitude embraces not only visible blessings but also uncertainty, disappointment, struggle, and experiences the believer does not yet understand.

Later biographical accounts report that Storm suffered a severe spinal or back disorder around 1899 that left him seriously disabled. This occurred years after the hymn was written, so the illness should not be presented as the event that inspired the 1891 text. It does, however, give later historical resonance to a hymn that Storm had already written about trusting God in both welcome and difficult circumstances.
