Basil Harwood

Basil Harwood was an English organist, composer, and church musician associated with the Anglican cathedral tradition. He served as organist at Ely Cathedral and later at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and composed hymn tunes, choral works, and organ music. In standard hymnal sources for Bless Thou the Gifts, Harwood is associated with the 1908 harmonization of DEUS TUORUM MILITUM rather than as the original composer of the melody.
