Benjamin Schmolck

Benjamin Schmolck was a German Lutheran pastor and hymn writer whose devotional hymns became popular in early eighteenth century Protestant worship. Born in Silesia, he studied theology and later served as a pastor in the Lutheran church. Schmolck wrote many hymns that were included in hymn collections used throughout German speaking regions. His hymns often emphasized themes of personal devotion, humility, and reliance on divine grace. The texts were valued for their clear spiritual message and accessible poetic style which made them suitable for congregational singing. One of his hymns later translated into English is My Jesus as Thou Wilt which reflects Christian trust in the will of God. Schmolck contributions helped strengthen the Lutheran tradition of congregational hymn singing and influenced later hymn writers in Germany and beyond.
