Benjamin Schmolk

Benjamin Schmolk was a German Lutheran pastor and hymn writer whose work became part of the rich tradition of seventeenth and eighteenth century German hymnody. Born in Silesia, he studied theology and eventually served as pastor of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Schweidnitz. Schmolk was known for his pastoral dedication and literary ability, producing hundreds of hymn texts and devotional poems. His hymns often reflected themes of repentance, trust in Christ, and gratitude for divine grace. During his lifetime his writings were widely circulated and included in Lutheran hymn collections. Although not all of his hymns remained in common use, several were translated into English and appeared in Protestant hymnals. Scholars recognize Schmolk as an important contributor to the devotional life of Lutheran congregations during the early modern period.
