Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux was a medieval Cistercian monk, theologian, and influential Christian writer whose devotional poetry later became important sources for Christian hymnody. Born in Burgundy France, he entered the Cistercian monastery at Citeaux and soon helped establish the monastery of Clairvaux where he served as abbot. Bernard became one of the most respected spiritual leaders of the twelfth century and was known for his sermons, theological writings, and guidance within the church. His devotional writings often focused on the love of Christ and the believer relationship with the Savior. Portions of his Latin poetry were later adapted into hymns that became widely used in Christian worship. Hymns such as O Sacred Head Now Wounded and Jesus the Very Thought of Thee are traditionally associated with his devotional writings. Bernard spiritual influence extended far beyond his lifetime and continues to shape Christian devotional tradition.
