Biography
Bessie Sykes (1905–1982) was a Scottish evangelistic musician, gospel-song writer, composer, accompanist, and collaborator in the traveling ministry she shared with her husband, Seth Sykes. Hymnary identifies her as a Glasgow-based evangelist who wrote music, accompanied meetings on a folding organ, and helped present illustrated services using lantern slides. Her work was therefore both creative and practical: she supplied music for congregational singing while also supporting the couple’s preaching and teaching ministry.
Hymnary indexes Bessie as author or composer of a number of gospel texts and tunes, and surviving hymnal records sometimes identify her under the form “Mrs. Seth Sykes.” In Mount Hermon Melodies, book two (1944), she is specifically credited as composer of the tune for “Thank You, Lord,” while later hymnals commonly credit both Seth and Bessie jointly for the text and tune. Other records also preserve her work as a harmonizer or composer in the Sykes repertory.
After Seth’s death in 1950, Bessie remained important to the song catalog’s transmission and rights history. Copyright notices for “Thank You, Lord” record renewals in her name in 1968 and 1973 before assignment to Singspiration. Available reliable sources document her music-making, accompaniment, songwriting, and evangelistic partnership, but do not establish enough about her formal education or denominational identity to state those details confidently. Her significance rests in the collaborative gospel-music ministry through which the Sykes songs circulated widely in Britain and later internationally.
