Biography

Carl E Backstrom was a Swedish American gospel songwriter and evangelist associated with the Scandinavian evangelical revival movement in the United States. Born in Sweden, he later immigrated to North America during the period when many Scandinavian Christians formed immigrant congregations. Backstrom became active in evangelistic work and gospel song writing within these communities. He wrote hymn texts and gospel songs that were used in revival meetings and church gatherings, particularly among Swedish American churches. His work often reflected themes of personal conversion, Christian faith, and devotion to Christ. Backstrom contributions illustrate how immigrant communities helped shape the development of gospel hymnody in North America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
