Carl Johann Philipp Spitta

Carl Johann Philipp Spitta was a German Lutheran theologian, poet, and hymn writer whose devotional writings became influential in nineteenth century Protestant spirituality. Born in Hanover, he studied theology at the University of Gottingen and later served as a Lutheran pastor. Spitta became widely known for his collection Psalter und Harfe, a series of devotional poems arranged for daily spiritual reflection. Many of these poems were later adapted or translated into hymns for congregational use. His writing emphasized personal devotion, trust in God providence, and the spiritual rhythms of daily Christian life. Several of his texts were translated into English during the nineteenth century and appeared in hymnals used across Europe and North America. Scholars often regard Spitta as one of the important figures in the revival of devotional hymn poetry in nineteenth century Germany.
