Carlton Raymond Young

Carlton Raymond "Sam" Young was an American Methodist minister, composer, arranger, conductor, teacher, and hymnal editor. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he began piano lessons at six and later studied brass, string bass, and jazz. After wartime service in the United States Army Air Forces, he earned degrees from the Cincinnati College of Music, the University of Cincinnati, and Boston University School of Theology. Ordained as a Methodist elder, he devoted his ministry to the theological and musical formation of congregational worship.

Young taught church music at Perkins School of Theology, Candler School of Theology, and Scarritt College, directed music for nine Methodist general conferences, and mentored generations of church musicians. He uniquely served as music editor of both The Methodist Hymnal (1966) and The United Methodist Hymnal (1989). His broader work included more than two hundred choral and organ compositions, nearly fifty hymn tunes, international teaching, and editorial service to the Global Praise program.

For All Who Love and Serve Your City, Young did not compose the underlying melody. He arranged and harmonized the early American tune CHARLESTOWN in 1964; that setting was copyrighted in 1965 and later paired with Routley's text in major hymnals. This precise credit preserves the distinction between an older anonymous tune and Young's influential modern treatment.
