Charles Hutchinson Gabriel

Charles Hutchinson Gabriel was an American gospel-song composer, lyricist, editor, and compiler born near Wilton, Iowa. Raised on a farm in a musically active family, he taught himself to play the reed organ and began teaching singing schools while still in his teens. After moving west, he served as music director at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in San Francisco around 1890–1892, a period associated with his early gospel-song work.

Gabriel later settled in Chicago and became a major figure in commercial gospel publishing, editing songbooks and writing texts, tunes, cantatas, anthems, and instructional works for publishers including E. O. Excell, Hope Publishing, and Homer Rodeheaver’s organization. He also wrote under several pseudonyms, including Charlotte G. Homer. Among his enduring songs and tunes are “Send the Light,” “My Savior’s Love,” “O That Will Be Glory,” and the music for “Higher Ground.”

Gabriel composed the music for “Brighten the Corner Where You Are” for its 1913 publication. His association with Homer Rodeheaver placed the song within the musical world of the Billy Sunday campaigns, where Gabriel’s direct, singable gospel style reached large revival audiences.
