Charlotte Elliott

Charlotte Elliott was an English evangelical Anglican poet, hymn writer, and editor born in 1789. She was a granddaughter of the influential evangelical clergyman Henry Venn and grew up in a family closely connected with the evangelical wing of the Church of England. After serious illness beginning in her early thirties, prolonged physical weakness became a major circumstance of her adult life and shaped much of her devotional writing.

A significant spiritual influence was the Genevan pastor Henri Abraham César Malan, whom Elliott met in 1822. Family records confirm a long correspondence and describe that encounter as important in helping her understand the freeness of divine grace. Later popular accounts dramatically connected Malan’s advice directly with Just As I Am, but nineteenth-century family testimony indicates that the hymn was written years afterward during a period of spiritual discouragement rather than at Elliott’s conversion.

Elliott edited The Christian Remembrancer Pocket Book and helped enlarge The Invalid’s Hymn Book, contributing numerous texts intended especially for people experiencing illness and sorrow. She wrote about 150 hymns, including My God, My Father, While I Stray. Just As I Am became her most extensively circulated work and exemplifies her characteristic themes of human weakness, divine grace, assurance, and dependence on Christ.
