Christian Friedrich Richter

Christian Friedrich Richter was a German Lutheran physician and hymn writer associated with the pietist movement centered in Halle. Born in Sorau Germany, he studied medicine and later worked as a physician connected with the educational and charitable institutions founded by August Hermann Francke. Richter wrote numerous hymn texts that expressed themes of repentance, faith in Christ, and spiritual renewal. His hymns were included in pietist hymn collections and used in devotional gatherings and church services. Richter writing reflected the pietist emphasis on personal religious experience and heartfelt devotion. Although his life was relatively short, his hymns contributed to the development of pietist hymnody in early eighteenth century Lutheranism.
