Christian Gregor

Christian Gregor was a Moravian bishop, composer, and hymn editor whose work played an important role in shaping Moravian church music during the eighteenth century. Born in Silesia, he joined the Moravian community at Herrnhut where he became deeply involved in the musical life of the church. Gregor composed hymn tunes, arranged sacred music, and edited Moravian hymn collections used in congregational worship. His efforts helped establish a structured musical tradition within Moravian communities across Europe and North America. Scholars often credit him with helping to standardize Moravian hymnody and with preserving many hymn texts associated with the movement. Gregor work illustrates the close relationship between theology, community life, and music in Moravian worship.
