Christopher Smart

Christopher Smart was an English poet whose religious writings occasionally intersected with hymnody and devotional literature. Born in Kent England, he studied at Cambridge and gained early recognition for his poetry. Smart life included periods of mental illness that led to confinement in an asylum, yet during this time he continued to produce religious poetry. His most famous work Jubilate Agno contains expressions of praise and devotion that later readers sometimes compare with hymn literature. Although he did not write hymns in the traditional congregational form, some of his devotional poetry has influenced later Christian writers and musicians. Scholars often view Smart as a distinctive religious poet whose work reflects both literary creativity and deep personal faith.
