Biography
Crawford Gates (1921–2018) was an American composer, conductor, educator, and church musician. Born in San Francisco and raised in Palo Alto, California, he began piano and composition as a child and later studied viola. After military service during the Second World War, he earned degrees from San Jose State University and Brigham Young University and completed doctoral study at the Eastman School of Music. He also pursued advanced conducting study.
Gates worked as a conductor and academic musician and composed extensively for orchestra, chorus, stage, and worship. His best-known works include music connected with Latter-day Saint worship and culture, including the hymn "Our Savior's Love" and the musical Promised Valley. His papers and musical manuscripts are preserved in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University.
Gates composed a later setting of "Ring Out, Wild Bells" that was copyrighted in 1948 and published in the 1985 Latter-day Saint hymnal. That setting uses an abridged and repeated form of Tennyson's text; its musical copyright is separate from the public-domain status of Tennyson's words.
