Day's Psalter melody

Biography

The tune ST. FLAVIAN is an anonymous English psalter melody associated with John Day's The Whole Booke of Psalmes, published in London in 1562. It belongs to the early English metrical psalm tradition and is written in Common Meter. Later hymnals have used ST. FLAVIAN with many texts, including Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days and Be Known to Us in Breaking Bread. Because the original tune predates modern copyright law, the traditional melody is public domain, though later harmonizations or arrangements may have separate copyright status.
