Dmitry Bortniansky

Dmitry Bortniansky was a Ukrainian born composer who served as a major figure in the development of sacred choral music in the Russian Empire. Born in Hlukhiv, he received early musical training before studying in Italy. Bortniansky later became director of the Imperial Chapel Choir in Saint Petersburg, where he composed numerous sacred choral works for Orthodox worship. His compositions helped shape the style of Russian Orthodox liturgical music in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Some of his melodies later appeared in Western hymnals through adaptation and arrangement. One melody attributed to him is associated with the hymn tune St Petersburg. His work represents an important connection between Eastern Orthodox choral tradition and broader Christian hymnody.
