Dong Hoon Lee

Dong Hoon Lee, also indexed in hymnological sources as Tong-hun Yi, is a Korean composer born in 1945. English-language biographical documentation about his broader career is limited, so claims about his education, church affiliation, appointments, or complete catalog should be made cautiously. Hymnary identifies him as the composer of the tune BAI and dates that music to 1967.

BAI entered international hymnody through Korean and Asian American worship resources. Hymnary records that the tune was altered by the Asian American Hymnbook Editorial Committee in 1981 before appearing in Hymns from the Four Winds in 1983, and it later appeared in major United Methodist and Presbyterian hymnals. The tune has been printed in different keys and editorial forms, including E-flat major and C minor, which shows that later hymnals adapted the setting for their own contexts.

Because the surviving English-language record centers chiefly on BAI, Lee's broader significance should not be exaggerated beyond the available evidence. His documented contribution nevertheless represents an important Korean musical voice within late twentieth-century North American ecumenical hymnody.
