Edward Hodges

Edward Hodges was an English born Anglican organist, composer, and church musician who contributed to nineteenth century sacred music in both Britain and the United States. Born in Bristol England, he trained as a musician and served as an organist in several English churches before moving to America. Hodges later became organist at Trinity Church in New York City where he helped improve the quality of church music and promote congregational hymn singing. He composed numerous pieces of sacred music including hymn tunes and choral works. Hodges musical contributions reflected the developing tradition of Anglican church music in the nineteenth century. Through his compositions and teaching he helped strengthen the role of music in worship and influenced later generations of church musicians.
