Edward Plumptre

Edward Plumptre was an English Anglican priest, biblical scholar, and hymn writer whose work contributed to Victorian religious literature. Born in London, he studied at University College Oxford and later served as professor of New Testament exegesis at Kings College London. Plumptre wrote numerous theological works, translations, and devotional texts. His hymn Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart expresses joyful praise and became widely used in Christian worship. The hymn was originally written for a choir festival in Peterborough Cathedral and was later expanded for congregational use. Plumptre scholarly background and pastoral interests shaped his hymn writing, which combined biblical imagery with poetic expression.
