Biography
Elizabeth Cecilia Douglas Clephane was a Scottish Presbyterian poet and hymn writer. Born in Edinburgh and later associated with Melrose in the Scottish Borders, she lived a quiet life marked by fragile health, devotional writing, and practical charity toward the poor. Her hymns were published after her death and include Beneath the Cross of Jesus and The Ninety and Nine. Beneath the Cross of Jesus first appeared anonymously in The Family Treasury in 1872 under the heading Breathings on the Border, and it has become one of the most enduring English-language hymns on the refuge, sorrow, and glory of the cross.
