Erik Routley

Erik Reginald Routley was an English Congregational minister, theologian, hymnologist, composer, editor, and teacher whose work profoundly influenced twentieth-century English-language congregational song. Born in Brighton on October 31, 1917, he attended Lancing College and studied classics at Magdalen College, Oxford, before theological training at Mansfield College. He was ordained in 1943 and served Congregational pastorates while developing an academic career that joined church history, worship, and music.

Routley returned to Mansfield College in 1948 as chaplain, lecturer, librarian, and director of music and later held the Mackennal Chair of History. His Oxford doctoral work became the foundation for The Church and Music, and books such as Hymns and Human Life, Hymns and the Faith, Christian Hymns Observed, and Church Music and Theology established him as a major interpreter of the relationship between doctrine, culture, and congregational singing. He also edited or advised numerous hymnals, including Congregational Praise and the Reformed Church in America's Rejoice in the Lord.

Routley was active in the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland for decades and helped shape the influential Dunblane music consultations in Scotland. His own creative work included more than a hundred hymn tunes and numerous texts, translations, and adaptations; representative songs include All Who Love and Serve Your City and New Songs of Celebration Render. In 1975 he moved to the United States, teaching church music and directing chapel worship at Westminster Choir College in Princeton. He died in Nashville on October 8, 1982, while attending a church-music conference.
