Frances Jane Crosby Van Alstyne

Frances Jane Crosby Van Alstyne, known professionally as Fanny J. Crosby, was born in New York in 1820 and was blind from infancy. She entered the New York Institution for the Blind in 1835, remained as a student and later joined its faculty, teaching subjects including grammar, rhetoric, and history. In 1858 she married Alexander van Alstyne, a musician and fellow graduate of the institution, while continuing to publish under her maiden name. Her church connections varied over a long life, but her sustained Methodist Episcopal affiliation is well documented.

Crosby began writing gospel hymns in the 1860s and became extraordinarily prolific, often dictating texts that composers and publishers set for Sunday schools, revival meetings, missions, and congregations. Her collaborators included William H. Doane, Robert Lowry, Phoebe Palmer Knapp, and Chester G. Allen. Among her enduring hymns are Blessed Assurance, Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior, Rescue the Perishing, Near the Cross, and To God Be the Glory. Later in life she devoted increasing attention to New York City rescue missions. Her importance lies not in a single composition story but in the way her memorable, biblically shaped texts helped define American gospel song and carried evangelical hymnody into worldwide use.
