Francisca Asuncion
Biography
Francisca Asuncion (born 1927 in Manila, Philippines) is a Filipino choral conductor, church musician, hymn writer, composer, arranger, and music educator. She earned a Bachelor of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary in the Philippines and later completed a Master of Music Education degree at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. Her career joined academic teaching with practical church music: she headed the music department at Philippine Christian College and also served on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary.
Asuncion’s documented work extends beyond a single hymn. Hymnary credits her with the tune ASPIRATION, dated 1961 and published in the E.A.C.C. Hymnal in 1963, as well as with later writing and arranging for congregational song. Her work is especially significant within twentieth-century Asian and Filipino church-music repertories, where indigenous and folk materials were often adapted for Christian worship without erasing their local musical character.
Her best-known congregational work grew from that same approach: she paired a Christian text with a Filipino folk melody and reshaped the melody for worship use. The resulting song entered Hymns from the Four Winds in 1983 and later appeared in Baptist, Methodist, United Church, Presbyterian, and Christian Science hymnals. Available biographical sources document her education, conducting, teaching, composing, and arranging, but do not establish a specific denominational affiliation clearly enough to state one here.
