Biography
Frederick Luke Wiseman (1858–1944) was an English Wesleyan Methodist minister, hymn-tune composer, and influential church leader. Born in York, he entered the Wesleyan Methodist ministry in 1881 and spent many years in mission work and connexional leadership. He became the first superintendent of the Birmingham Mission, later served as secretary of the Home Mission Department, and was elected President of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference in 1912 and of the united Methodist Conference in 1933.
Wiseman had a strong interest in hymnody as well as preaching and administration. He chaired the committee that prepared the 1933 Methodist Hymn Book, a major twentieth-century Methodist collection, and several of his own tunes were included in that volume. He also lectured and wrote about Charles Wesley and Methodist song.
His tune ALL HALLOWS, in 8.10.10.4 meter, became one of the best-known alternate settings of Christina Rossetti's “None Other Lamb.” It appears with the text in Methodist and other Protestant hymnals and provides a contrasting musical tradition to William Jeater's ROSSETTI.
