Frederik Hermanus Kaan

Frederik Hermanus Kaan, widely known as Fred Kaan, was a Dutch-born British minister, hymn writer, translator, and ecumenical worker born in Haarlem on July 27, 1929. His teenage years were marked by the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. His parents participated in resistance work and sheltered people in danger, while three of his grandparents died during the wartime famine. Kaan later described emerging from the war as a committed pacifist. He studied theology and psychology at Utrecht University and, through contact with British Congregationalism, continued his ministerial preparation at Western College in Bristol.

Kaan was ordained to the Congregational ministry in 1955 and served churches in Britain, including Pilgrim Church in Plymouth, where he began writing hymns more systematically in the 1960s. From 1968 he worked in Geneva with the International Congregational Council and the developing World Alliance of Reformed Churches, traveling widely and focusing on ecumenical relations, communications, human rights, peace, and justice. He later served as a moderator in the United Reformed Church and in an ecumenical team ministry.

His collections included “Pilgrim Praise,” “Break Not the Circle,” “Planting Trees and Sowing Seeds,” and “The Only Earth We Know.” “Help Us Accept Each Other” reflects the plain language, social concern, reconciliation, and ecumenical vision characteristic of his mature hymn writing.
