George D. Moore
Biography
George D. Moore is identified in hymnological indexes as a late-nineteenth-century itinerant evangelist active in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He composed the melody paired with Henry Lake Gilmour's text; tune authorities date the setting to 1889, and Sunlit Songs printed it under Moore's name in 1890. Later books commonly call the tune HAVEN OF REST, while some indexes use GOOD SHIP or GOODSHIP. Reliable reference works do not supply confirmed birth and death years, a denomination, or a fuller biography, so placeholder dates sometimes attached to his name should not be treated as historical facts. He should also not be conflated with similarly named ministers or musicians without documentary evidence.
