Biography

George Duffield Jr was an American Presbyterian minister and hymn writer remembered for composing the hymn Stand Up Stand Up for Jesus. Born in Pennsylvania into a family of ministers, he studied theology and entered the Presbyterian ministry. Duffield served several congregations and became known for his strong preaching and pastoral leadership. His most famous hymn was written in 1858 as a tribute to evangelist Dudley Tyng who had died after an accident. Inspired by Tyng final words encouraging believers to stand firm in their faith, Duffield composed the hymn Stand Up Stand Up for Jesus. The hymn became widely popular and has remained a powerful call to Christian courage and commitment. Duffield ministry and writing contributed to the development of American Protestant hymnody during the nineteenth century.
