Biography
George Lockwood (born 1946) is an American United Methodist pastor, missionary, translator, editor, and collector of congregational song whose work has centered on communication between Latin American and English-speaking churches. United Methodist sources identify him as a Chicago native who served as a missionary in Costa Rica and later pastored Spanish-speaking congregations in Arizona and California.
Lockwood became deeply involved in the translation and editorial work that brought Spanish- and Portuguese-language congregational songs into North American hymnals. He served on the editorial committee for Celebremos II and on the Hispanic Consultation of the Hymnal Revision Committee that prepared The United Methodist Hymnal. He also traveled through Central and South America interviewing church musicians, gathering songs, and presenting this repertory in conferences and workshops. Hymnary credits him with translation work on dozens of hymns across several languages and traditions.
For The United Methodist Hymnal, Lockwood translated or adapted a substantial group of Spanish-language songs; United Methodist research notes that nine of his translations entered the 1989 hymnal. His work with “Camina, pueblo de Dios,” rendered in English as “Walk On, O People of God,” belongs to that broader ministry of cross-cultural mediation. His significance in hymnody lies less in creating a personal repertory of original songs than in helping congregations encounter Christian song from cultures and languages beyond their own.
