Henry Alford

Henry Alford was an English Anglican clergyman, biblical scholar, and hymn writer whose work contributed to Victorian church life and worship. Born in London, he studied at Trinity College Cambridge and later became Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. Alford was widely respected as a scholar of the New Testament and produced influential biblical commentaries. In addition to his academic work he wrote several hymns for congregational worship. His most widely known hymn is Come Ye Thankful People Come, written as a harvest hymn expressing gratitude to God for both earthly provision and spiritual harvest. The hymn became widely sung in harvest festivals across English speaking churches. Alford contributions reflect the close relationship between biblical scholarship, pastoral ministry, and hymn writing in nineteenth century Anglicanism.
