Biography
Henry Carey was an English poet, composer, and playwright traditionally credited with composing the tune God Save the King which later became associated with several national hymns. Although scholarly debate continues regarding the tune's exact authorship, Carey is widely recognized in historical accounts of the melody. The tune later became the musical basis for the American patriotic hymn America My Country Tis of Thee. Its dignified melodic character contributed to the hymn's enduring popularity.
