Henry William Baker

Henry William Baker was an English Anglican priest and hymn writer associated with the Victorian era revival of hymn singing. Born in London, he studied at Trinity College Cambridge and later served in parish ministry within the Church of England. Baker is widely remembered as the editor of the influential hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, first published in 1861. This collection helped shape Anglican congregational singing in the nineteenth century. Baker also wrote several hymn texts, the most widely known being The King of Love My Shepherd Is, a paraphrase of Psalm 23. His editorial and literary work contributed significantly to the development of Anglican hymnody.
