Howard L. Brown

Howard L. Brown (1889–1965) was an American Christian youth leader, gospel song writer, and composer whose work was closely connected with California Christian Endeavor. Hymnary records that he directed California Christian Endeavor from 1930 to 1940, a period when the movement had a substantial presence in the Los Angeles and Orange County area. That leadership placed him within an interdenominational youth-ministry culture in which congregational singing, testimony, service, and personal commitment were prominent, although the sources reviewed do not establish a specific denominational membership for him.

Brown also developed a sizable body of sacred song. Hymnary indexes eleven texts and numerous tunes under his name, including The Glory of Salvation, Trusting the Lord with All My Heart, and other gospel songs intended for practical church and devotional use. The same authority source says that he wrote many spiritual songs with his wife, Margaret Winter Brown, making their partnership an important part of his musical work.

Copyright records add unusually concrete evidence to Brown’s publishing activity. A U.S. Copyright Office renewal catalog identifies him and Margaret as the writers of a 1935 song published in Songs of Cheer for Youth and identifies Howard as its composer; the renewal was registered in 1962. His legacy is therefore best understood at the intersection of youth ministry and usable gospel music: he helped lead Christian Endeavor work in California while also supplying texts and tunes that continued to circulate in later hymnals.
