James Edmeston

James Edmeston was an English architect, lay church leader, and hymn writer whose contributions were widely used in nineteenth century Anglican worship. Born in London, he pursued a professional career in architecture while remaining deeply involved in church life and charitable activities. Edmeston was known for his work with Sunday schools and for writing hymns intended for congregational singing and Christian education. Historical sources suggest that he wrote several thousand hymns, although only a portion were widely published or preserved in hymnals. His best known hymn Lead Us Heavenly Father Lead Us expresses a prayer for divine guidance and trust in God providence. Edmeston work illustrates the important role played by committed laypeople in the growth of English hymnody during the nineteenth century.
