James Russell Lowell

James Russell Lowell was an American poet, critic, editor, diplomat, and professor associated with New England literary culture. He wrote The Present Crisis in 1845 in the context of public moral debate over slavery, national policy, and the duty to stand with truth. The hymn Once to Every Man and Nation is a cento adapted from that larger poem.
