John Bowring

John Bowring was an English linguist, diplomat, and hymn writer whose texts became part of nineteenth century Protestant hymnody. Born in Exeter England, he gained a reputation as a gifted linguist and scholar of international literature. Bowring served in public roles including diplomatic work and later as governor of Hong Kong. Alongside his political career he wrote hymns reflecting personal devotion and gratitude for God providence. His most widely known hymn is In the Cross of Christ I Glory, which celebrates the central place of the cross in Christian faith and worship. The hymn became widely used in Anglican and Protestant hymnals. Bowring life illustrates how individuals outside the formal clergy also contributed significantly to the development of Christian hymnody.
