John Ellerton

John Ellerton was an English Anglican clergyman, hymn writer, and translator who made notable contributions to Victorian hymnody. Born in London, he studied at Trinity College Cambridge before entering the ministry of the Church of England. Ellerton served several parishes and was active in efforts to improve congregational worship and hymn singing. He wrote original hymns and also translated texts from Latin and German sources. His hymns frequently reflected themes of daily prayer, Christian service, and the passing of time in the life of faith. Among his best known hymns are The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended and Savior Again to Thy Dear Name We Raise. Ellerton work helped expand the devotional and liturgical range of Anglican hymnody.
