Biography
John Samuel Bewley Monsell was an Irish Anglican clergyman and hymn writer whose texts became widely used in nineteenth century worship. Born in Londonderry Ireland, he studied at Trinity College Dublin and was ordained in the Church of England. Monsell served in several parishes in Ireland and England and became known for his energetic preaching and pastoral work. Alongside his ministry he wrote numerous hymns that were included in Victorian hymnals. His texts often reflected themes connected to the church year, Christian discipleship, and the believer relationship with Christ. Among his best known hymns are Fight the Good Fight with All Thy Might and O Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness. Monsell hymns were valued for their strong scriptural tone and clear devotional expression.
