Biography

Justin Heinrich Knecht (1752–1817) was a German composer, organist, teacher, conductor, and music theorist whose career was centered in the Swabian city of Biberach. Born there on September 30, 1752, he received early musical training and later studied at the Lutheran collegiate institution in Esslingen from 1768 to 1771. He returned to Biberach as a teacher and music director, developing a broad career that included church music, public concerts, theatrical music, instrumental composition, and music education. He also served as organist at St. Martin's Church and wrote extensively for organ and choir.

Knecht's output ranged well beyond hymn tunes. He composed sacred vocal music, stage works, instrumental pieces, and pedagogical works on organ playing, harmony, thoroughbass, and keyboard instruction. He also participated in the preparation of a major collection of four-part chorale melodies for Württemberg, issued in 1799 with Johann Friedrich Christmann. The melody later associated in English-language hymnals with the names ST. HILDA and ST. EDITH came from this chorale tradition and was originally connected with the German text "Der niedern Menschheit Hülle."

Knecht briefly served in Stuttgart at the Württemberg court before returning to Biberach, where he resumed his musical leadership and remained until his death on December 1, 1817. His legacy is that of a versatile late-eighteenth-century church and civic musician: a composer active in both sacred and secular repertories, an organist and teacher, and a theorist concerned with practical musical training. The later adoption and adaptation of his chorale melodies in English hymnody extended the reach of his music far beyond its original German setting.
