Biography
Karolina Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg, usually known as Lina Sandell, was a Swedish hymn writer, editor, translator, and author born in Fröderyd, Småland, in 1832. The daughter of Lutheran pastor Jonas Sandell, she received substantial private education at home after childhood illness limited her participation in ordinary household work. Her diaries and early poems show that she was writing and reflecting seriously on faith, literature, and the natural world while still young.
Sandell published religious poetry anonymously in the 1850s and later became an editor and translator for Evangeliska Fosterlands-Stiftelsen, a revival and mission movement within Swedish Lutheranism. She edited hymnals, children’s periodicals, calendars, and devotional literature, and her large body of writing includes “Blott en dag, ett ögonblick i sänder” (“Day by Day”) and “Bred dina vida vingar” (“Thy Holy Wings”). Her collaboration with singer-composer Oscar Ahnfelt helped carry many of her songs through Scandinavian revival circles.
Her father drowned in Lake Vättern in 1858, followed by further family bereavements, but “Tryggare kan ingen vara” had already been published in 1855. The tragedy therefore should not be presented as the hymn’s origin. Later suffering did, however, give biographical depth to Sandell’s continuing emphasis on God’s steadfast care.
