Biography

Lars Åke Lundberg (1935–2020) was a Swedish Church of Sweden priest, composer, singer, and author whose work joined pastoral ministry with the renewal of congregational song. Born in Vänersborg on August 23, 1935, he was ordained for the Diocese of Stockholm in 1960. His ministry included parish work in Stockholm, service as a prison chaplain at Österåker, and later leadership as parish priest in Kungsholm.

Lundberg became known for experimenting with new forms of worship during the 1960s, including services shaped by jazz, spirituals, and contemporary song. Alongside his pastoral work he wrote and composed music for church use, recorded several albums during the 1960s and 1970s, and published books on prayer, preaching, childhood, and Christian life. His songs and hymn tunes entered Swedish congregational repertories, including material later represented in Den svenska psalmboken.

Among his best-known melodies is GUDS KÄRLEK, written in 1968 for Anders Frostenson's hymn on God's love and freedom. He also composed or translated other widely used Swedish church songs. Lundberg's contribution lay in making contemporary musical idioms available to congregational worship while remaining closely engaged with pastoral, social, and liturgical concerns.
